Biographical History
Erich Segal, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1937, was an American author, screenwriter and educator. Segal was educated at Harvard and graduated with his A.B. in 1958 as class poet and Latin salutatorian. He went on to earn his A.M. in classics and Ph.D. in comparative literature from Harvard in 1959 and 1965, respectively. His time at Harvard formed the basis of one of his most well-known works, Love Story. He collaborated on the screenplay for The Beatles' animated film, Yellow Submarine as well as five other major motion pictures. Segal wrote and edited numerous scholarly texts on Greek and Roman literature. In addition to his writing career, Segal taught classics at Ivy League institutions including Harvard, Yale and Princeton and was an honorary fellow at Wolfson College at Oxford. He died at age 72 from a heart attack after a 25 year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
