Biographical History
English master shipwright and Commissioner of the Navy at Chatham.
British naval official and diarist.
Jackson was due to inherit the bulk of Pepys' estate under his will, but in 1703, a few months before Pepys' death, a new will was drawn reducing the bequest to 40 pounds a year.
English diarist and sec'y of the admiralty.
Samuel Pepys served as an officer in the Admiralty of England during the reigns of King Charles II and King James II. He also served as a member of Parliament and as President of the Royal Society. He wrote and published Memoirs of the Royal Navy (1690). Pepys is best known for his diaries, written between 1659 and 1669, which assist in documenting English life in the 17th century. The diaries were published in 1825.
Gaselee was the Pepys Librarian at Magdalene College, Cambridge (1909-1917).
English official in navy office and diarist.
Samuel Pepys was a Restoration-era virtuoso, with numerous and diverse interests and activities. Reflecting the scope of his mind was his library of three thousand volumes, carefully selected and culled; his famous diaries give insight to the selection and organization of his library, which has been preserved at Cambridge University. Pepys was a gifted public servant who worked for the Navy Office; his diaries record his own remarkable observations, and give great insight into the first decade of the Restoration.
English naval officer.
Samuel Pepys, English diarist and naval administrator, is also chiefly celebrated for his highly detailed and honest Diary, kept mostly between 1660 and 1669. John Evelyn (1620-1706) was an English country gentleman whose life-long diary is considered an invaluable source of information on life in 17th-century England. Evelyn and Pepys formed a lifelong friendship after the Restoration.
