Biographical History
James Wolfe (1727-1759), a British army officer. His victory at the battle of the Plains of Abraham (1759, Sept. 13) and his death on the battlefield made him a hero in Great Britain.

Wolfe was a British major-general.
British general. In 1757 he was quartermaster general of the ineffective expedition against Rochefort, France.
James Wolfe (1727-1759) of Westerham, Kent, England, was born into a military family. In 1741 he accepted a commission as a marine lieutenant, was appointed a brigade-major in 1745, and saw action at the Battle of Culloden and in the siege of Louisbourg in 1758. Impressed with Wolfe's military abilities, William Pitt elevated him to the position of Major-General in America with orders to attempt the seizure of Quebec from the French in 1759. General Wolfe's success in this venture led to the expulsion of the French from Canada. Immediately following the victory, Wolfe died of wounds received in battle.
