Biographical History
Lawyer, state legislator, and U.S. senator and representative from Oklahoma; b. John William Elmer Thomas in Indiana; studied law there; moved to Oklahoma ca. 1901; resident of Lawton.
Elmer Thomas was a Democratic politician from Oklahoma. He was a member of the Oklahoma State Senate, 1907-1920, then he represented Oklahoma's Sixth Congressional District in the U. S. House of Representatives, 1923-1927, and the state in the U. S. Senate, 1927-1950. As senator, he chaired the Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, 1949-1950, the Committee on Indian Affairs, 1935-1945, and the Special Silver Committee, 1946. Early in the twentieth century Thomas had been a lawyer and real estate developer in the area of Lawton and Medicine Park, Oklahoma.
