Music has been at the center of the lives of Edith Gutierrez and her daughter, Pauline Oliveros. Gutierrez has taught piano for much of her life, played professionally, and was active in the Houston music scene. Oliveros, whom Gutierrez had with her first husband, J.B. Oliveros III, is an internationally known composer and accordionist. In 1952, at the age of 20, Pauline moved from Houston to San Francisco. She and her mother wrote to one another for the next 20 years. They discussed many topics, among which were their musical interests and activities. They come from a musically talented family. Gutierrez's father, John Monroe Gribbin, had the ability to learn musical instruments by ear. Her mother, Pauline Gribbin, taught piano for many years. Gutierrez's second husband, Patricio Gutierrez, played professionally for many years.
Pauline Oliveros is an American avant-garde composer and performer. Born in 1932, she initially studied with her mother and grandmother, eventually studying composition at the University of Houston (1949-52), San Francisco State College (1954-56), and privately with Robert Erickson. She was codirector of the San Francisco Tape Music Center (1961-65) and director when it became the Mills Tape Music Center (1966-67). From 1967-81 she taught at the University of California, San Diego. In 1981 she became consulting director fo the Creative Music Foundation at West Hurley, New York.
