One of the original students at the Royal College of Chemistry and became assistant to A. H. Hofmann (F. R. S. 1851); demonstrator of Chemistry at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London 1851, and lecturer on Chemistry at Royal Military Academy at Woolwich 1852; ordnance chemist at Woolwich, 1854, and chemist to War Department there, 1856; chief official authority on explosives and with James Dewar invented cordite 1889; Fellow of the Royal Society 1860; Royal Medal, 1877; president of Chemical Society, 1875-1877; president of Institute of Chemistry, 1881-1882; president of Iron and Steel Institute 1891; Bessemer medallist; Telford medallist; C. B. 1877; Knighted 1883; K. C. B. 1891. Baronet 1893. G. C. V. O. 1901.
