Louisville native Major Robert Anderson graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1825 and served active duty in the Mexican-American War. Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter after thirty-four hours of Confederate attack, which began the United States Civil War. Promoted to Major General during the Civil War.
