Biographical History

Helen Hamilton Gardener was an author, feminist, and suffragist (1920-1925). She was the first woman member of the United States Civil Service Commission. Born Alice Chenoweth, she later legally adopted her nom-de-plume. She willed her brain to Cornell University, where research was in progress to refute the claim of a former United States Surgeon General that the female brain was inferior to that of the male.
