First performance Minneapolis, 20 December 1935, the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy, conductor. The text of the hymn is a free version by Martin Luther of the Nicene Creed. Origin of the basic musical theme uncertain. Possibly derived from the traditional plan chant melody with German words used by Luther ca. 1524 to replace the Latin Credo in Unum Deum of the Mass.
