Biographical History

King commanded Wisconsin's "Iron Brigade" during the Civil War. In 1863 he accepted appointment as the U.S. Minister to Rome. While there, he helped apprehend John Harrison Surratt, one of the alleged conspirators in the Lincoln assassination.
