Biographical note: Army officer; Lt. General Walter C. Short served in World War I and was the commanding officer of the Hawaiian Department at the time of the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor.
Walter Campbell Short (b. March 30, 1880, Fillmore, Ill.-d. Sept. 3, 1949, Dallas, Tex.), Major General in the U.S. Army, was commissioned in the infantry in 1902 following college graduation the year before. He served in the Mexican Expedition and was chief of staff of the Third Army during the First World War. Later he was commander of the Hawaiian Department in 1941, was relieved of duty after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and retired shortly thereafter.
