John Stainer was an English musicologist and organist. He was born into a musical family, educated at Oxford, and held several prestigious positions as organist, culminating at St. Paul's Cathedral. He helped found the Musical Association, and was principal of the National Training School for Music and professor of music at Oxford, among many others. He also composed church music, although he didn't consider his compositions valuable. Stainer is perhaps most valued as an early and influential musicologist; he was knighted in 1888.
