Assistant to John Hart, principal of the Albemarle Female Institute, Professor of Hebrew, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 1869-79.

C.H. Toy, b. Norfolk, VA, graduated University of Virginia, studied theology at the Southern Baptist Seminary in Greenville, SC. Served as chaplain in the Civil War, captured at Gettysburg, exchanged in Dec. 1863, reentered and served in the summer of 1864. In 1880 he became Hancock Professor of Hebrew and other Oriental languages at Harvard. Founded several learned societies and authored scholarly books and articles.
