U. S. naval officer; hero of the Battle of Lake Erie, 1813.

Born in South Kingston, R.I., Aug. 23, 1785; famous for his battle on Lake Erie, with his dispatch to General Harrison, "We have met the enemy & they are ours", Sep. 10, 1813; U.S.Congress voted thanks, a medal & rank of Captain, died on the Isl. of Trinidad, Aug. 23, 1819; a granite obelisk is erected to his memory by state of Rhode Island.
