The American painter, draftsman, lithographer, muralist and writer Francis Davis Millet was born in Mattapoisett, Mass. He served in the Union army in 1864, and traveled the world as a correspondent for many American newspapers, and on various government cultural assignments. In 1884 he purchased a house in Broadway, a British town frequented by artists, where he helped establish an art studio. He died in the Titanic disaster.

He played a major role in the founding of the American Federation of the Arts, was extensively involved in the World Columbian Exposition, worked on the Fine Arts Commission in Washington, D.C., during the terms of presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. Millet went down with the Titanic, April 15, 1912.
