Biographical History

Arthur Bliss Lane was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 16, 1894. He graduated from Yale University (B.A., 1916) and entered the diplomatic service as secretary to the United States ambassador to Italy. Lane served in diplomatic posts throughout Europe, and joined the Department of State in 1923. He served in Mexico and Nicaragua before returning to Europe in 1937. Lane served as ambassador to Colombia (1942-1944) and ambassador to Poland (1945-1947). He retired from diplomatic service in 1947 and wrote and lectured extensively. Lane was an active member of anti-communist groups and served on the American Committee to Investigate the Katyn Massacre (1949-1952). He died in New York City, on August 12, 1956.
