Biographical History

Vest was born in Frankfort in 1830. He received degrees from Centre College and Transylvania University. With his brother-in-law, Captain R.S. Triplett, Vest established the OWENSBORO BULLETIN in 1852, which was the second newspaper in that city. Vest served as editor and is known as the author of the essay "Tribute To A Dog," written for a lawsuit seeking damages for the death of a favorite dog. Vest later sold his interest in the BULLETIN and moved to Missouri to practice law. He entered politics in his new state, serving as a presidential elector in 1860, the Missouri legislature in 1861, and the Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1865. He won election to the U.S. Senate in 1879, beginning a long tenure there which lasted until 1903. Vest died in 1904.
