Litt (1956), Emmanuel College, Univ. of Cambridge; lecturer, Univ. of Alberta, 1954-55; asst. professor, Univ. of Iowa, 1955-56; asst. professor (1956), assoc. professor (1959-63), professor and chairman of the dept. of history, UCLA (1965-68); dean of social sciences (1976-77) and dean of the College of Letters and Sciences (1977-82), UCLA; published works include The nationalist revival in France, 1905-1914 (1959), Action française : royalism and reaction in twentieth century France (1962), Varieties of fascism : doctrines of revolution in the twentieth century (1964), Peasants into Frenchmen : the modernization of rural France, 1870-1914 (1976), France, fin de siècle (1986), and The hollow years : France in the 1930s (1994).
