Biographical History
Radio astronomer and physicist. Chief Research Scientist with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (Australia) Division of Radiophysics; the first Director of the Parkes Telescope, later the Australian National Radio Astronomy Observatory, 1961-1970.
Radio astronomer. Director of the Aust'n Nat. Radio Astronomy Observatory, Parkes, NSW, 1961-1971, Prof. of Physics & Astronomy at the Calif. Inst. of Tech.(Caltech), 1955-1961. In 1948 he discovered several sources of cosmic radio emission from galaxies outside the Milky Way. He was a fellow of the Aust'n Academy of Science (1969), fellow of the Royal Society (1973) & appointed CBE 91981).
