Biographical History

William Morris Davis (1850-1934) was an American geographer, geologist, geomorphologist, and meteorologist, often called the "father of American geography." Grove Karl Gilbert, also known as G.K. Gilbert, was an American geologist. In 1871 he joined George M. Wheeler's geographical survey as its first geologist. He then joined the Powell Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region in 1874, becoming Powell's primary assistant, and stayed with the survey until 1879.

One of America's most famous geologists, G.K. Gilbert's studies included stratigraphy, geomorphology, structural geology. He was a geologist with the Powell and Wheeler Surveys (1871-1878), and then worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, 1879-1918. In addition, in 1898 he was one of three U.S. Geological Survey scientists who accompanied the Harriman Expedition to Alaska.
