Biographical History

Amos Milton Musser was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1830. In 1837, he moved with his widowed mother to Quincey, Illinois, and fought in the Battle of Nauvoo at age 16. He was subsequently driven to Iowa with his family and other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Musser worked as a clerk in Iowa and was officially baptized into the LDS Church at Council Bluffs in 1851. That same year Musser traveled to Utah with the Easton Kelsey Company and became a clerk in their titheing office. He participated in one of the first Mormon missions to India and returned to Utah in 1857. Musser married Ann Leaver in 1858, and later married plural wives Mary Elizabeth White (1864), Belinda Marden Pratt (1872), and Anna Seegmiller (1874). He spent most of the 1860s and 1870s as a traveling bishop in Utah, and also served as general superintendent of the Deseret Telegraph Company. Musser was appointed Assistant Church Historian in 1902. He died in Salt Lake City on September 24, 1909.
