Eric Gill was an English artist and writer.
Arthur Eric Rowton Gill was born at Brighton, England, in 1882; studied at Chichester Art School; studied lettering under Edward Johnston and after 1903 earned his living as a letter-cutter; moved to Ditchling, Sussex, in 1907 and became associated with Hiliary Pepler's St. Dominic's Press; commissioned to carve the Stations of the Cross in Westminster Cathedral, which were completed in 1918; in 1924, he went to Capel-y-ffin, Abergavenny, Wales, and engaged in engraving for the Golden Cockerel Press of Robert Gibbings and designed the 'Perpetua' and 'Gill Sans-serif' printing types; in 1928 he moved to Pigotts, Speen, where he engraved for The Golden Cockerel Press's The Canterbury tales and The four gospels; established his own printing press in conjunction with Rene ́Hague; died in 1940.
Author, artist, sculptor, engraver, typegraher, book illustrator, architectural designer, calligrapher, printer, and social philosopher. Gill spent his early years in Brighton, Chichester and London. He converted to Roman Catholicism in 1913 and became a Dominican tertiary.
In 1915 at Ditchling, Gill associated with Hilary Pepler with whom he founded St. Dominic's Press. There Gill authored several works and produced numerous engravings along with other artists such as David Jones and Philip Hagreen. Gill also made wood-engravings for the Golden Cockerel Press in 1924, and became a type-designer for the Monotype Corporation in London. He is known for his Gill Sans type font, Perpetua and Bunyan.
Gill's stone carvings include the Stations of the Cross in Westminister Cathedral (1914-1918), the war memorial at Leeds University, "The Driving Out of the Money Changers," and other works, including those in the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. As a literary man, he wrote numerous books and periodical articles on art and philosophy. Gill designed his own tombstone for exhibition with the epitaph: "Remember me. E.G., the stone-worker, 1936. Woe is me." Eric Gill died in 1940.

Gill began his career as a cutter of inscriptions, and later became known for type designs, stone carvings, engravings, and drawings. A convert to Catholicism, Gill also published works on religion, art, and modern life.
