The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, owned by the City of New York, has been open as a museum since 1917. Poe lived in the cottage, located in the Bronx, N.Y., from 1846 until his death in 1849. It was declared an official city landmark in 1966 and has been under the administration of the Bronx County Historical Society since 1975.

Edwin Markham lived from 1852-1940. He was born in Oregon City, Oregon to a pioneer family. He lived much of his life as a young adult in California. His first poem was published at age 28 and did not receivewide recognition until the age of 47, when "Man With the Hoe" brought him international fame. In addition to "Man With the Hoe, Markham published a number of bestselling poetry books, and was chosen Oregon Poet Laureate in 1921. Markham lived in the New York area for most of his late adult life.

Edwin Markham (1852-1940) was an American author and poet. Born and raised in California, he taught literature there until 1879 when he became Superintendent of Education for El Dorado County. Five California schools are named for him. In 1901 he relocated to Staten Island in New York, where he established the Poetry Society of America in 1910. Edwin Markham was a teacher and popular American poet. In contrast to his contemporaries, his verse revolves around the themes of love, peace, and socialism. He became a voice for labor reform and spiritual growth.

Edwin Markham was born in the Oregon territory and raised in California, where he earned a teaching certificate and taught for several years. He became a follower of the utopian socialist Thomas Lake Harris, and contributed poetry to national magazines for many years before publishing The Man with the Hoe. This poem, based on a Millet painting, eloquently celebrates the working class and made Markham an international celebrity. Although critics were sharply divided on the quality of his work, he remained an extremely popular poet; his work is typically concerned with themes of social reform and universal brotherhood.

Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life enjoyed scant critical acclaim. Poems in the collection are dedicated to "The English Room of the College of the Pacific" where Markham once lectured (1931).

Charles Edward Anson Markham (1852-1940), later known as Edwin, was the youngest of nine children, born on April 23, 1852, in Oregon City, Oregon. His parents, Elizabeth Winchell and Samuel Markham, were married in Michigan and traveled by wagon train to settle in the Oregon Territory. His parents divorced shortly after his birth and his mother and her younger children moved to Suisun Hills, northeast of San Francisco.

Markham received his teacher's certificate in 1870 from the California College in Vacaville, graduated from San Jose State Normal School in 1872, and then studied classics at Christian College in Santa Rosa. After graduation, Markham taught in many communities across Central and Northern California. His first teaching position was in El Dorado County and in 1879 he was elected county superintendent of schools. In 1884, he was a school headmaster in Hayward, and in 1890, he was hired as the principal of the Tompkins Observation School in Oakland.

Markham rose to fame as a poet with the publication of "The Man with the Hoe," which was inspired by a Francois Millet woodcut of the same name. On New Year's Eve of 1898, Markham read the poem at a party, which led to its publication in the San Francisco Examiner. Because Markham's populist views were in line with the social reform movements of the day, his poem became an overnight sensation.
