Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) was influential in founding the United States government and served as its first Secretary of the Treasury (1789-1795) under President George Washington.

Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis, British West Indies on January 11, 1757. He immigrated to the United States in 1772, where he received educational training in the schools of Elizabethtown, N.J., and King's College (now Columbia University). Hamilton was appointed aide-de-camp to General Washington in 1777, was a member of the Continental Congress in 1782-1783, and a member of the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention in 1787 which adopted the Constitution of the United States. Mortally wounded in a duel with Aaron Burr at Weehawken, he died in New York City the following day on July 12, 1804.

When the Revolutionary War began, Hamilton supported the colonists. In 1777, General George Washington made Hamilton his aide-de-camp. After the war, he was admitted to the bar and began practicing law in 1783. Hamilton served on the Continental Congress, 1782-1783, and in 1787 was elected to the New York legislature. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. In 1789, President Washington elected Hamilton as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. A Federalist, Hamilton politically opposed Thomas Jefferson and spoke against Jefferson and Aaron Burr's bid for the presidency. In 1804, Aaron Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel, during which Hamilton was mortally wounded. He died the next day.
