Biographical History

D.D. Tompkins was Governor of New York, 1807-1817, and Vice President of the United States, 1817-1825.

Daniel D. Tompkins, a native of New York City, was trained at the U.S. Military Academy. He was cited for gallantry and meritorious conduct in the Seminole War (1836). Tompkins was a quartermaster general stationed in New Orleans during the Mexican War and was cited for meritorious conduct particularly in the performance of his duties in the prosecution of the war with Mexico. Colonel Tompkins died 26 February 1863 at the age of 49.

Daniel D. Tompkins (Columbia A.B., 1795), Governor of New York (1807-1816), member of the New York Constitutional Convention of 1801, the New York Assembly of 1803, was elected to U.S. Congress in 1804, which he left to assume the chair of the New York Supreme Court, 1804-07.

He served in the War of 1812 as Commander-in-Chief, N.Y. Militia, and became Vice President under James Monroe, 1817-1825.
