Alexander John Godley (Sir) (b. Feb. 4, 1867, Kent, England-d. March 6, 1957, Oxford, England), General in the British Army, received his commission as a Lieutenant in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1886. He later served in the South African War, and beginning in 1910 he was appointed as commander, the New Zealand Defence Forces, to create a territorial army capable of integration with wider British forces. During World War I, he headed the II ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Corps) serving on the Western Front and in France. In 1928, General Godley was appointed Governor of Gibraltar and its commander in chief.
