United States Senator and Governor of Mississippi.
American political leader.
Native of Virginia; graduate of Washington College; practiced law in Alabama and Mississippi; United States Senator from Mississippi 1848-1852; Mississippi governor 1852-1854; member of the Confederate Congress; author of numerous works on the South and Southwest.
Foote worked as an attorney prior to his election to the U. S. Senate, 1847, and to the governorship of Mississippi, 1852.
Henry Stuart Foote (1804-1880), elected United States senator from Mississippi in 1847 and later governor, supported the Compromise of 1850. He spent part of the 1850's in California but returned to Mississippi.
