From the description of John Frederick Kensett papers, 1806-1896. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 78162865

John Frederick Kensett (22 March 1811 - 14 December 1872), was a noted artist of the Hudson River School of Landscape Painting. His career from 1828 to 1840, was as an engraver, having worked in several engraving firms at various times in New York, New Haven, CT, and Albany, NY. By 1840, Kensett's disenchantment with the engraving profession became so profound, he decided to go to Europe, where he spent seven years studying to be a landscape painter. He was quite successful in his endevors, returning to New York in 1847 well established and connected with many prominent American artists, writers, and intellectuals. This is indicated by his election to the National Academy of Design in 1849. In 1860, he was appointed to the National Art Commission which made recomondations regarding the interior art and design of the United States Capital Building. His last major endeavor was as a member of the Union League Club he oversaw the planning and administration of the art exhibit at the New York Metropolitan Fair held in 1864 to benefit the United States Sanitary Commission.
