Powhatan Ellis, 1790-1863, was born in Amherst County, Virginia. He was a lawyer, State Supreme Court judge (1823-25), and a U.S. Senator.

Powhatan Ellis (1790-1863) was a lawyer, federal judge, Mississippi senator, and diplomat. From 1839 to 1842 he served as United States Minister Plenipotentiary to Mexico. Brantz Mayer was a lawyer, artist, author, soldier, and scientist from Baltimore; he also served as secretary of the American legation in Mexico from 1841 to 1844.
