Biographical History
Ernest Harmon was a graduate of Bradford (VT) Academy. He attended Norwich University for one year before being appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, from which he graduated in 1917. His military career spanned two world wars. As a young lieutenant, he commanded F Troop, 2nd Cavalry, A.E.F., in World War I. He commanded the 2nd Armored Division, "Hell on Wheels," in Africa and France, and the 1st Armored Division in Italy during World War II. After the war, Harmon organized and commanded the U.S. Constabulary, the function of which was to restore law and order to war-torn Germany. Upon his retirement from the army, Ernest Harmon began a new career as president of Norwich University, 1950-1965, during the period of its greatest expansion. Please see the biographical files in Box 2 and the files of articles about E.N. Harmon in Box 18 for further biographical information.
