Vice-President of United States.
Vice President of the United States, U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from South Carolina; born near Calhoun Mills, Abbeville District (now Mount Carmel, McCormick County), S.C.
South Carolina attorney and politician. Calhoun served in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, was appointed Secretary of War in 1817 (serving in that capacity to 1825), and was elected Vice-President of the United States in 1824.
Born in Abbeville district, Sough Carolina, March 18, 1782; graduated at Yale, 1804; studied law, graduated Litchfield Connecticut, 1806; admitted to bar, 1807; began practice in Abbeville; member of state general assembly, 1808 and 1809; Congress, Democrat, March 4, 1811-March 3, 1817; Secretary of War, December 10, 1818-March 3, 1825; Vice President, U.S., March 4-December 28, 1832; Senator, December 12, 1832-March 3, 1843; Secretary of State, March 6, 1884-March 6, 1845; Senator, Nov. 26, 1845-his death, in Washington, March 31, 1850. Calhoun), Feb. 15, 1792-July 25, 1866, she bore 10 children: Andrew Pickens (1811-1865), Floride Pure (1814-1815), Jane (1816-1816) Anna Maria (1817-1875), Elizabeth (1819-1820), Patrick (1821-1858), John Jr. (1823-1855), Martha Cornelia (1824-1857), James Edward (1826-1861) and William Lowndes (1829-1858). South Carolina State Representative, 1808-1810; United States Representative from South Carolina, 1811-1817; Secretary of War, 1817-1824; Vice President of the United States, 1824-1832; United States Senator from South Carolina, 1832-1843, 1845-1850; Secretary of State, 1844. Proponent of nullification and state rights. Died March 31, 1850, in Washington, D.C. Daughter Anna Maria married Thomas Green Clemson, the founder of Clemson University.
