Biographical History

Duane, son of William Duane (1760-1835), worked at the Aurora general advertiser in Philadelphia, practiced law (from 1815) and later served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1833). He was removed from office for refusing to withdraw government deposits from United States Bank before a meeting of Congress. -- Thomas Elder was a prominent lawyer in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

William J. Duane was a lawyer and legislator. He was Secretary of Treasury under Andrew Jackson, on whose order Duane was removed for refusing to withdraw government deposits from the U. S. Bank before the meeting of Congress in 1833.
