Biographical History

Linguist and anthropologist. Capell was ordained an Anglican minister in 1926, and shortly after became a Reader in Oceanic languages at Sydney University. His early and significant linguistic work was in New Guinea. Capell published a large number of works on language. His works include 'Handbook of Australian languages', 'A new approach to Australian linguistics,' and linguistic surveys of Australia, the South-Western Pacific and New Guinea.

Trained as a high school teacher, Arthur Capell was ordained in 1925, and later appointed Reader in Oceanic Linguistics at the University of Sydney. His special interest is the New Guinea and Pacific Ocean areas.
