Biographical History
Peter Singer, born in Melbourne 6 July 1946, was Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Centre for Human Bioethics at Monash University from 1979 (1983) to 1999 and subsequently Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University. In 2005 he was appointed (part-time) Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne, concurrent with his Princeton appointment. He is widely recognised in Australia and internationally for his contribution to animal rights debates, an interest developed during his years at Oxford and popularised through his influential book Animal Liberation, and the Great Ape Project, and in the broader of philosophy and ethics.
