Biographical History

Dr. Mark Frederick Boyd, born in 1889, was an internationally known doctor in the field of public health and tropical medicine. His career combined public health service, teaching, and research. He did studies on malaria in Brazil, Jamaica, Mississippi, Georgia, and North Carolina. Dr. Boyd established a research laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida in 1931. He worked at the State Board of Health of Florida from 1947 to 1952. His work in tropical diseases, especially malaria, earned him the Brumpt Award in 1953.

Principal among Boyd's other interests was Florida history. He co-authored a book, "Here They Once Stood: The Tragic End of the Apalachee Missions," with Hale Smith and J. W. Griffin. Boyd's historical research concentrated on the early Spanish settlements and the Native American population of Florida.
