Camden, S.C. attorney, plantation owner, state legislator, and U.S. Senator. He held several military posts during the Civil War including a staff position in Richmond, Va. from 1862 to 1864. His wife was Mary Boykin Miller (1823-1886).

James Chesnut, Jr. (1815 - 1885) of Camden, S.C., was a planter, lawyer, United States Senator, a signatory of the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, a Confederate States Army general; and husband of Mary Boykin Chesnut ( 1823 - 1886); includes several of his printed calling cards.
James Chesnut, lawyer, planter, U.S. and South Carolina legislator, and commander of the South Carolina Confederate Reserves, was born 18 January 1815, in Camden, South Carolina, and died near there 1 February 1885. During the Civil War, Chesnut served as an aide to General Beauregard, as chief of the military on the Executive Council of South Carolina, and as an aide on President Davis's staff.
