Leonard Townsend Gerow (b. July 13, 1888-d. Oct. 12, 1972) was born in Petersburg, Virginia. He received his commission in the infantry from the Virginia Military Institute in 1911, and advanced to the rank of brigadier general in October 1940, then to major general in February 1942, and to lieutenant general in January 1945. He served as commandant of the Command and General Staff School from October 1945 to January 1948, then as commanding general of the Second U.S. Army from 1948 to 1950. Gerow retired from military service in July 1950.
