Weatherly, Ulysses G. (Ulysses Grant), 1865-1940

In 1895, Ulysses G. Weatherly joined the Indiana University faculty, where he remained until his retirement in 1935. Throughout his teaching career, he taught courses in many disciplines, including history, sociology, and economics.

Ulysses Grant Weatherly was born on April 21, 1865, in West Newton, Indiana, to William and Lydia Weatherly. Weatherly had quite a varied academic career, graduating with an A.B. from Colgate University in 1890, attended the University of Leipzig from 1893-1894, received his PhD from Cornell University in 1894, graduated from Pillsbury Academy in 1896, attended Columbia University from 1899-1900, and lastly received an LLD (LittD) from Colgate University in 1910. Sometime during his collegiate career Weatherly became a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. In 1890 Weatherly married Alice May Burgess, and they had one daughter, Ruth Burgess (Mrs. Harold Gray).

Weatherly joined the IU faculty in 1895 as an Assistant Professor in European History. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1896 and served in that capacity until 1899, when he was appointed a full Professor in the department of Economics and Sociology. In 1900 he was named as chair of the department, a position he held until his retirement in June of 1935. After retirement, Weatherly was named Professor Emeritus in Economics and Sociology.

During his professional career Weatherly was also very active in several community and professional organizations. Within the American Sociology Society he served on the Executive Committee from 1907-1910, and was Vice-President from 1920-1923 and President from 1923-1924. In Indiana, he was President of the Indiana Conference of Charities from 1911-1912, and Chairman of the Indiana Child Labor Commission from 1909-1915. Weatherly was also an active member of the Eugenics Research Association and the Indiana Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. He authored Social Progress: Studies in the Dynamics of Change, and several journal articles.

Ulysses G. Weatherly passed away in July 1940.
