Rains, Gabriel James, 1803-1881
Variant namesU.S. Army officer and Confederate general. A native of Craven County, N.C., Rains was wounded in the Seminole War in Florida in 1838 and fought there again during the Seminole War of 1849-1850. During the Civil War he was assigned to the mining defenses of Yorktown and Williamsburg, Va. He also formulated a plan of torpedo protection for Southern harbors and invented the explosive subterra shell. In 1876 Rains moved to Charleston, S.C., where he served for several years as a clerk in the Quartermaster Department of the U.S. Army. He died in Aiken, S.C.
