Born in Strabane, Ireland, in 1724, he joined the army at 18, served under Wolfe at Quebec, and in 1766 was appointed Lieutenant Governor and the following year Governor General of Quebec. He successfully defended Quebec against Arnold's force in the Revolution. In 1778 he was succeeded in the governorship by Gen. Haldimand. He served in the army throughout the war, and in 1786 was again appointed Governor General of Canada, which office he held until 1796, although he was absent from the country, 1791-93. He died in England, November 10, 1808. (blue index cards)
