Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872) collected over 60,000 manuscripts from Britain, Europe and the Middle East. He maintained his library first at his estate of Middle Hill in Worcestershire; in 1864-1865 he moved the collection to Thirlestaine House in the town of Cheltenham. A.N.L. Munby's five biographical and bibliographical volumes on this great collector were published between 1951 and 1960 as Phillipps studies. His researches for these volumes form the basis of the radio play.
