Archaeologist and author of extensive descriptions of French monuments, Lenoir was a notable figure of the French Revolution, devoted to saving the monuments of France's past from destruction and sale on foreign markets. He kept an inventory of the Musée des Antiquités et Monuments Français under his administration from 1791 to 1816.
