Author identified by correspondences between ms. and known facts of Emerson's life, i.e., voyage to Canton, 1818-20 (p. 73), and frequent references to Phila. Board of Health, on which Emerson served many years. Handwriting resembles Emerson's. This material does not appear to have been used directly in any of Emerson's publications.
