Jane Louise Curry was born in East Liverpool, Ohio in 1932. She received her M.A. and Ph.D from Stanford University. She has worked as a writer, artist, and college lecturer. She has written acclaimed works of historical fantasy for upper elementary and middle school readers, including her "Abaloc" series. Jane L. Curry is the author of the "Abaloc" series and other historical fantasy books for middle school youth. She has produced a book of retold California Indian legends, and is known for creating the Smith Family mystery series. She has been given the honor book designation of the Spring Children's Book Festival (1970), the Notable Book award of the Southern California Council on Literature (1971), New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year (1971), Ohioana Book Award (1978), Edgar Allan Poe Award runner-up (1978). A translation of her "Over the Sea's Edge" was named Book of the Month by Deutsche Akademie fuer Kinder und Jungendliteratur (1971).
