Squire was born in Plymouth, England on April 2, 1884; educated at St. John's College, Cambridge; unsuccessful Parlimentary candidate for Labour and Liberals; literary editor, New Statesman, 1913; published book of poems, Survival of the fittest (1916); founded literary magazine, London Mercury, in 1919; chairman, Architecture Club, 1922-28; editor of various books of poetry and also published volumes of critical essays; knighted, 1933; became reviewer, Illustrated London news, 1937; died at Rushlake Green, Sussex, December 20, 1958; his collected poems were published in 1959.
