In 1783 Manuel wrote Essais historiques, critiques, littéraires, et philosophiques; this resulted in his imprisonment. He participated in the storming of the Bastille in 1792 and participated in other acts during the French Revolution. However he was somewhat sympathetic to Louis XVI and as a result was guillotined in Paris in 1793.
