Heintzelman, Stuart, 1876-1935

Stuart Heintzelman (b. Nov. 19, 1876, N.Y. C.-d. July 6, 1935, Hot Springs, Arkansas), Major General in the U.S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1899 and was assigned to the 4th Cavalry in the Philippines, followed by service with the 6th Cavalry in China participating in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion. With a keen interest in research and military history, he acted as instructor in the Leavenworth School, the Army Service Schools, and at Princeton University. During World War I, he served in France and Italy, including as chief of staff, IV Army Corps, and chief of staff, Second Army. Later he was director of the Army War College, commander of the 22nd Infantry in Hawaii, and commander of the Harbor Defenses of Eastern New York. He ended his career as Commandant of the Command and General Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
