Historian, journalist and educator. He attended the University of Illinois where he earned a B. A. 1912 and an M. A. in English, 1913. Nevins moved to New York to work and eventually was made a Professor of History at Columbia University. Wrote numerous biographies and articles on history. President of the American History Association in 1959. Helped found the Society of American Historians.

Allan Nevins, historian and Columbia University professor, was the author of more than fifty books. In 1948, Nevins created the Oral History Research Office at Columbia University. After retiring from teaching in 1958, Nevins became the senior research associate at the Huntington Library. In 1963, he co-authored a book on the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company entitled Timber and men: the Weyerhaeuser story.

Allan Nevins, American historian, author numerous books on American history, his opus magnum being the Ordeal of the Union (New York : Scribner, 1947-1971). From 1931 to 1958, he occupied the DeWitt Clinton Chair in American History at Columbia University. Having retired from Columbia, he accepted the position of senior research associate at the Huntington Library. He retired in 1970.

Allan Nevins, American historian and journalist. From 1931 to 1958, he occupied the DeWitt Clinton Chair in American History. While at Columbia, he was the moving force at organizing of the Society of American Historians, and established the Oral History Project at Columbia. During the World War II, he was a special representative of the office of War Information in Australia and New Zealand, and in 1945-1946 was chief public affairs officer for the American Embassy. From 1958 to 1969, he was senior research associate at the Huntington Library.

Allan Nevins specialized in Civil War and economic history and American biography. He worked as a journalist in New York before beginning a 30 year career as professor of history at Columbia University in 1928. After his retirement from Columbia in 1958, he spent the remainder of his life as a senior research associate at the Huntington Library. Nevins won two Pulitzer Prizes for his biographies of Grover Cleveland and Hamilton Fish and was chair of the U.S. Civil War Centennial Commission.
