English scholar and art historian, knighted in 1927. Starting his career in 1884 at the Department of Prints and Drawings of the British Museum, Cust was appointed director of the National Portrait Gallery in 1895, and in 1901 was named Surveyor of the King's Pictures under Edward VII. Cust authored many art-historical works, including the "Index of artists represented in the Prints Department at the British Museum" (1893-1896), and contributed articles to the Dictionary of National Biography and other publications.
