Bernays, Isaac, 1792-1849
Variant namesIsaac Bernays was rabbi in Hamburg from 1821. He struggled against the Reform movement and influenced his disciple, Samson Raphael Hirsch. His son, Jacob, taught Greek at Bonn University (1848-53), but, as a Jew, could not be promoted. He then left and helped found the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary in 1853. He was later reinstated in Bonn in 1866 as assistant professor and chief librarian.
